CE DONT, CE [preposition] QUOI – 2 Relative Pronouns meaning WHAT

CE DONT and CE [preposition] QUOI are relative pronouns. Relative pronouns exist to connect two sentences, each of which would otherwise stand alone.

In other words, with CE referring to a previously stated item, use DONT ou QUOI.

• CE DONT is introduced only when the verb uses the preposition DE in its infinitive form.
• Note that the preposition DE does disappears.

Ce dont je parle est drôle. (parler de)

Ce dont je parle de est drôle.

What I’m talking about is funny.

J’ai acheté ce dont tu as besoin. (avoir besoin de)

J’ai acheté ce dont tu as besoin de.

I bought what you need.

• CE [preposition] QUOI and its derivatives are introduced when the verb uses any preposition but DE. Note that

• the preposition stays
• CE is necessary when at the beginning of the proposition
• CE is necessary after C’EST
• In everyday French, CE often disappears

Je vois (ce) à quoi tu penses. (penser à)

I see what you are thinking about.

Ce à quoi tu penses, c’est à aller à Quiberon. (penser à)

What you are thinking about is to go to Quiberon.

On ne sait pas (ce) vers quoi tu vas.

We don’t know what you are going towards.
