What does ” s’il vous plaît ” mean? How do you say ‘ please ’ in French? How is it pronounced? How is it used in a French sentence? Listen to Anne, a French native say it at FrenchHour.com.
s’il vous plaît – if it to you please – In everyday French, s’il vous plaît means ‘please’. However, s’il vous plaît, also means ‘excuse-me, your attention please, listen up, shush’.
Today, I wanted to share my favorite ‘s’il vous plait’ ever. It’s the one in The Little Prince. Le Petit Prince is too young to master the subtleties of formal and informal French, and he uses both the TU form and the VOUS form in the same sentence. Children tend to do that type of mistake sometimes, and it’s really cute 🙂
- « Le premier soir je me suis donc endormi sur le sable à mille milles de toute terre habitée. J’étais bien plus isolé qu’un naufragé sur un radeau au milieu de l’océan. Alors vous imaginez ma surprise, au lever du jour, quand une drôle de petite voix m’a réveillé. Elle disait :– S’il vous plaît… dessine-moi un mouton ! »
- “The first night I thus fell asleep on the sand a thousand miles from any residential area. I was far more isolated than a shipwrecked man on a raft in the middle of the ocean. So, imagine my surprise, at dawn, when a funny little voice woke me up. It said :
- Please… draw me a sheep! “
