La Marseillaise – ‘the one from Marseille’ – is the name of the French national anthem. It’s said to have been written by Rouget de Lisle, during the French revolution, in 1792. It was written during very trying times, as a result, its extremely violent lyrics are a call to kill the enemy in revenge.

It has had many different versions. Nowadays, mainly the first chorus and verse are sung.

Allonsenfants de la Patrie …. Let’s go, children of Homeland

Le jour de gloire est arrivé ! …. The day of glory has arrived!

Contre nous de la tyrannie …. Against us tyranny’s

L’étendard sanglantest levé …. Bloody flag is raised!

L’étendard sanglantest levé …. Bloody flag is raised!

Entendez-vous dans nos campagnes …. Do you hear, in our countryside,

Mugir ces féroces soldats ? …. These fierce soldiers roaring?

Ils viennent jusque dans vos bras …. They are coming all the way to your arms

Égorger vos fils, vos compagnes ! …. To slit the throats of your sons, your partners!

Aux armes, citoyens …. Take your weapons, citizens

Formez vos bataillons …. Form you army

Marchons, marchons …. Let’s march, let’s march

Qu’un sang impur …. My an impure blood

Abreuve nos sillons …. Water our trenches

Amour sacré de la Patrie …. Sacred love of Homeland

Conduis, soutiens nos bras vengeurs …. Lead, support our avenging arms

Liberté, Liberté chérie …. Freedom, beloved freedom

Combats avec tes défenseurs ! …. Fight with your partisans

Combats avec tes défenseurs ! …. Fight with your partisans

Sous nos drapeaux, que la victoire …. Under our flags, let victory

Accoure à tes mâles accents …. Rush up to your manly accents

Que tes ennemis expirants …. Let your dying enemies

Voient ton triomphe et notre gloire ! …. See your triumph and our glory!

Aux armes, citoyens …. Take your weapons, citizens

Formez vos bataillons …. Form you army

Marchons, marchons …. Let’s march, let’s march

Qu’un sang impur …. My an impure blood

Abreuve nos sillons …. Water our trenches

Nous entrerons dans la carrière …. We will enter the quarry

Quand nos aînés n’y seront plus …. When our elders are no longer there

Nous y trouverons leur poussière …. We will find their dust

Et la trace de leurs vertus …. And the trace of their virtues

Et la trace de leurs vertus …. And the trace of their virtues

Bien moins jaloux de leur survivre …. Much less eager to outlive them

Que de partager leur cercueil …. Than to share their casket

Nous aurons le sublime orgueil …. We will have the sublime pride

De les venger ou de les suivre ! …. Of avenging them or following them

Aux armes, citoyens …. Take your weapons, citizens

Formez vos bataillons …. Form you army

Marchons, marchons …. Let’s march, let’s march

Qu’un sang impur …. My an impure blood

Abreuve nos sillons …. Water our trenches
