Who is going to win the presidential election?

Last Sunday, the first round of the presidential election process took place. There were 11 candidates and, as expected, the top two vote-getters were Emanuel Macron and Marine Le Pen. We will know who will be president for the next five years when Macron and Le Pen face off in the second round of voting on May 7.

On Sunday morning, I accompanied my mother to the voting booth – well not quite because the privacy of the vote is a cornerstone of democracy in France. We had first had a hefty breakfast and then had journeyed the two kilometers from the farm where I host my IPFs to the town hall in Thourie, my little village, Thourie, Brittany where I do the IPFs.

I left my mother at the door of the town hall as I chatted with Gerard, the farmer who lives next door. There weren’t many people around because it was early, but also because, I must admit, there aren’t that many people in Thourie, period. So, in my small village the results didn’t really reflect the national trend. Jean-Luc Mélenchon, the far-left candidate, got the most votes, followed very closely – two votes – by this Le Pen woman.

In any case, on Sunday night, after the results of the first round of voting were announced, Macron celebrated his victory at La Rotonde, a bistro in the 6^th arrondissement in Paris. Journalists lashed out, claiming he was celebrating as if he had already won the presidency. The French quickly followed and booed the arrogance of this young former banker, demanding to know, “How can he celebrate his victory before we have cast our votes?”

Since then it seems that the media talk only of Le Pen. She is here and she is there, she is this and she is that. Many of the French say they either will not vote for Macron or they will cast a blank vote. Too much. What is more, Mélenchon, a ‘neither… nor’ supporter who still thinks he won the first round, has not yet urged voters to support Macron.

Of course, Macron is now appearing presidential. He is wearing a darker suit, takes more meetings and has toughened his speech.

With so much media bias and so many people feeling they are not represented, I still don’t know who will win, even though a few days ago, it seemed impossible for a far-right candidate such as Le Pen to become president of France.

What’s at stake, of course, is the presidency. But even if Macron wins, what also is at stake is a viable government. In mid-June, the French will vote again to elect 577 deputies of the National Assembly. If Macron becomes president but doesn’t get the parliamentary majority, I don’t know how the government will operate.

Dimanche dernier, c’étaient les élections. Le premier tour des présidentielles, en tous cas. Comme prévu, des 11 candidats, les deux qui ont été élus par les Français sont Emmanuel Macron et Marine Le Pen. On saura qui est le président pour les cinq prochaines années le soir du 7 mai.

Dimanche matin, j’ai accompagné ma mère à l’isoloir, enfin pas tout à fait car le secret du vote est bien gardé. Juste après un petit déje bien fourni, nous avons fait les quelque 2 kilomètres qui séparent la ferme de la mairie de mon petit village, à Thourie en Bretagne où je fais les IPFs. Je l’ai laissée à la porte de la mairie, et j’ai bavardé avec Gérard, le fermier d’à côté. Il n’y avait pas grand monde car il était tôt, mais aussi car il faut bien l’avouer, il n’y a pas grand monde à Thourie, point barre. Et là, les résultats ne reflètent pas vraiment le mouvement national. C’est Mélenchon qui a gagné, suivi de très près – 2 voix – par la Le Pen.

En tous cas, le soir des résultats, dimanche soir, Macron est allé fêter sa victoire à La Rotonde, un bistro du 6^ième. Les journalistes lui ont sauté dessus. Ils arguent que Macron fêtait en fait sa victoire pour la présidence. Les Français ont vite embrayé et huent l’arrogance de ce jeune ancien banquier. « Comment peut-il fêter sa victoire avant que nous ayons voté ? » Depuis, j’ai l’impression de n’entendre que Le Pen par ici, elle par-là, et elle ci, et elle ça. J’entends des tas de témoignages de Français qui ne voteront pas pour Macron, ou qui voteront blanc. Trop. De plus, Mélenchon, ce niniste en puissance, qui pense toujours avoir gagné et que personne ne s’en rend compte, n’a toujours pas appelé à voter pour Macron.

Bien sûr, Macron se présidentialise maintenant. Il a changé son costume pour en mettre un plus foncé, il multiplie les rencontres, il durcit son discours.

Avec tant d’agitation journalistique et tant de gens ne sachant pas pour qui voter, je me demande quand même qui va gagner, même si il y a seulement quelques jours, il semblait impossible qu’une candidate de l’extrême-droite puisse gagner la présidence.

Alors, le premier enjeu, c’est bien sûr la présidence. Toutefois, l’autre enjeu, si Macron gagne, ce sont aussi les législatives. En effet, à la mi-juin, les Français revotent pour élire les 577 députés de l’Assemblée Nationale.

Et si Macron est élu mais qu’il n’obtient pas la majorité parlementaire, je ne sais pas comment le pays sera dirigé.
