Present Tense - Irregular Verbs
Le présent - Les verbes irreguliers
French and English use the present tense differently.
In English, the present tense is used in 2 different instances and it has two forms:
- to express a general statement, English uses the simple present
I learn French with Anne.
2. to express an on-going action, English uses the progressive present
I am learning French with Anne.
French doesn’t use that form the same way with ‘am –ing’, ‘is –ing’, and ‘are –ing’. Instead, when insisting about the on-going aspect of the action, French uses être en train de + verb in its infinitive form.
Je ne peux pas laver la vaisselle car je suis en train de faire mes devoirs.
