les dés sont jetés – the dice are thrown (away). In everyday French, les dés sont jetés means ‘the die is cast’.

  • « Ça y est, la décision est prise : on a mis le bulletin dans l’urne. Les dés sont jetés et on ne peut plus rien y faire. »
    • “That’s it, the decision is made: we’ve cast our vote. The die is cast and nothing can be done about it.”
