fait maison – made house. In everyday French, fait maison means something that is made from scratch, something that isn’t store bought, something home-made, even if we’re talking about a restaurant.

Note that

fait maison doesn’t have a dash, and that home-made does

fait agrees in gender and number with its noun:

une confiture faite maison

des gelées faites maison

  • « J’aime bien les desserts faits maison. »
    • “I like home-made desserts.”
