esprit de clocher – chauvinism – Mot du Jour

esprit de clocher – spirit of church tower, steeple. People who have an ‘esprit de clocher‘ stick together, they are biased by their own kind. In everyday French, esprit de clocher means ‘for your team’, for your kind’, ‘chauvinistic’.

  • « Ben t’as pas trop l’esprit de clocher si tu votes pour l’équipe belge. Je sais qu’ils parlent français, mais quand même 🙂  »
    • “Well, you’re not too chauvinistic if you vote for the Belgian team. I know they speak French, but still :-)”
