la langue de bois - the tongue of wood. la langue de bois is often used with ‘pratiquer’ (regular ER verb, conjugated like AIMER is). It’s used mostly in politics and it means to talk out of both sides of one’s mouth, to wiggle your way out of an issue or a question, to double talk.
- « Ce président pratique sans cesse la langue de bois. Il ne pense qu’à ses intérêts et on n’aura jamais la réponse à nos questions. »
- “This president constantly double talks. He thinks only of his interests and we’ll never get the answer to our questions.“
